Preparing the Elderly for Hurricanes:

It’s that time of year down here in Florida and in the aftermath of Fay and a few more on their way, hurricanes are the topic of today.

First and foremost, if you are on oxygen contact your power company and register with them as an oxygen dependent home. See if you will be placed on a priority list for getting your power restored, if not you will need to come up with a plan B.

When facing the decision or mandate to evacuate, know where your special-needs shelters are located. To name a few, here are their numbers or you can visit each county’s website:

Brevard County
(321) 637-6670
Orange County
(407) 650-4047
Seminole County
(407) 665-5102

Seniors evacuating to these facilities should have a list of medications, any diet restrictions and oxygen requirements if necessary. Take a change of clothes, two weeks of medications, your insurance cards and in some cases your caregiver.
