Keeping Seniors Cool in the Hot Summer Months

Hyperthermia is a term for heat-related illnesses including heat stroke, heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat exhaustion and heat cramps. Seniors are more susceptible to these illnesses due to their body’s diminishing ability to adequately respond to the summer heat.

Risk Factors:

· Poor blood circulation and sluggish sweat glands
· Heart, lung, kidney diseases or illness causing fever
· High blood pressure
· Being overweight or underweight
· Drinking alcohol and/or being dehydrated

Tips on How to Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses:

· Get the senior out of the sun and into an air-conditioned environment
· Offer fluids such as water or juice
· Have senior bathe or sponge off with cool water
· Have the senior lie down and/or apply cool, wet cloths to wrists and neck
